Breast implants are composed of a silicone shell with a filler: saline implants contain a saltwater solution, silicone implants contain silicone gel. Silicone gel-filled breast implants were licensed by Health Canada in 2006, and have been used extensively throughout the world and are often preferred over saline-filled implants for a number of reasons:

INTRASHIEL BARRIER

All Allergan gel-filled breast implants have a patented INTRASHIEL barrier technology. This barrier in the shell reduces shell permeability and minimizes gel diffusion or gel bleed.
